The Words of Sun Tzu
Sun Tzu Words about Intelligence
"Intelligence is of the essence in warfare - it is what the armies depend upon in their every moves". There are 5 kinds of spies that can be employed: local [yin] spies, inside spies, double agents, expandable agents, and unexpandable agents. When the 5 kinds of spies are all active and no one knows their methods of operation [tao] this is called the imperceptible web and this is ruler's treasure. Local spies are the enemy's own countrymen in our employ. Inside agent are enemy officials we employ. Double agents are enemy spies who report to our side. Expendable agents are our own agents who obtain false information we have deliberately leak to them and who then pass it on to the enemy spies. Unexpandable agents are those who return from enemy camp to report. Sun Tzu The Art of Warfare [Yin-ch'üeh-shan] Sun Tzu Words about Leadership The traits of a true commander are: wisdom, humanity, respect, integrity, courage and dignity. With his wisdom he humbles the enemy. With his humanity he draw people near to him. With his respect he recruits men of talents and character. With his integrity he makes good on his reward. With his courage he raises the morale of his men. With his dignity he unifies his command. Thus if he humbles his enemy, he is able to take advantage of changing circumstances; If people are so close to him, they will be of a mind to go battle in earnest. If he employs men of talent and wisdom, his secret plan will work. If his reward and punishment are invariably honored, his men will give their all. If the morale and courage of his troops is heightened, they will of themselves be increasingly martial and intimidating. If his command is unified, the men will serve their commander alone. Sun Tzu The Art of Warfare [Yin-ch'üeh-shan]
